FAQs About Engineered Timber Flooring

Engineered timber flooring is made from a real hardwood surface layer bonded to multiple layers of plywood or high-density fibreboard. It gives the appearance of solid wood but with greater structural stability.

It’s constructed by layering a hardwood veneer over a core of cross-laminated plywood or similar materials. This layered structure helps prevent warping, swelling, or shrinking due to temperature or moisture changes.

Yes – but only if the top hardwood layer is thick enough. Many high-quality engineered floors can be lightly sanded and refinished.

Yes, its moisture-resistant design makes it a better choice than solid wood for areas like kitchens or below-grade spaces, provided it’s installed correctly and maintained properly.

Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit. Use a damp mop (never wet) and a wood floor cleaner designed for engineered finishes. Avoid harsh chemicals or excessive water.

Absolutely. Engineered floors can be glued down or floated over concrete subfloors, making them ideal for modern homes or flats with slab foundations.

Steam mops are not recommended for engineered timber floors. The high heat and moisture can damage both the hardwood veneer and the core layers over time. Even though engineered flooring is more moisture-resistant than solid wood, it’s still important to clean it using a damp (not wet) microfibre mop and a wood floor cleaner specifically designed for engineered surfaces. This helps preserve the finish and prevents warping or delamination.

It is possible to repair dents using a wax filler stick or wood putty that matches the floor colour. The Wooden Floor Company are experts at repairing wooden floors and also stock repairs and maintenance products. Please contact us for further advice.
